Kohl Construction has been creating neighborhoods and building fine custom homes in the Hampshire-Franklin County region of Western Massachusetts since 1986.
From small-scale projects in Hadley, Northampton, Belchertown and Shutesbury to Amherst's largest subdivision in several decades, we have constructed over thirty residential developments and hundreds of homes for a variety of clients.
In the process we have earned a solid reputation for finding thoughtful and responsible solutions to planning, building and design challenges.
Because we are both developer and builder, we are able to oversee, manage and integrate all aspects of a project, from the big picture down to the smallest custom details.
A well-known recent single family development in Amherst is Hop Brook Meadow, with 28 homes, gracefully set on two winding roads surrounded by natural buffers and extensive Town-owned Conservation lands.
Serving as developer, Kohl Construction also built 23 of the homes in this sought-after neighborhood.
Another Amherst project successfully developed by Doug Kohl is East Woods, with 49 homes on two cul-de-sacs and one connecting through-street. This young neighborhood, adjacent to the established Amherst Woods subdivision, quickly became a vibrant community. Its residents share neighborhood parties in the summer and have been much admired for mounting the Valley's most creative Hallowe'en festivities year after year.
Ten of the homes in East Woods were built by Kohl Construction.
In addition to many traditional single-home neighborhoods, we have constructed two large co-housing developments in Northampton.
Pathways Co-Housing is a 27-unit community of one and two family homes surrounding a shared activity center (common house) on a 45 acre site. Designed in collaboration with Kraus-Fitch Architects of Amherst, the development was built in accordance with Energy Star standards.
Community members enjoy shared activities in the common house and picnic area shown above.
The site layout preserved 33 acres as open space and incorporated walking and ski trails through the protected forest buffer.
Rocky Hill Co-Housing, designed by Coldham Architects of Amherst, comprises 28 units and a common house in its core area and 5 single-family homes in a small cluster on the entrance road.
Located on 27 acres, of which 19 acres are designated open space, its closest neighbor is the Pathways community.
Like the earlier Pathways project, Rocky Hill was developed with a central focus on energy efficiency and green building methods. Common House interior is shown below.
Our current projects in Amherst include South Middle Street, 6 view lots on a hillside near the Holyoke Range and Amherst Hills, an elegant 70-lot neighborhood off Station Road. Our newest residential development, Emerson Way, is off Burts Pit Road in Northampton and consists of 55 lots on 58 lightly wooded acres.
After more than two decades of building in the Pioneer Valley, Kohl Construction homes are known for their aesthetics, efficiency, fine craftsmanship and unequaled value. Our reputation as a premiere local homebuilder has grown from a strong history of delivering projects within budget and on time, without sacrificing quality or design creativity.
Our clients will tell you that we are committed to making each family's building process a rewarding experience, and that our goal is to exceed your expectations.
